Chief Physician and Associate Professor Dr. Peter Schiedermaier examines patients suffering from diffuse liver disorders or elevated enzyme levels in a dedicated liver consultation hour on an outpatient basis. Elevated liver enzymes are always an indication of damaged liver cells. Elevated liver enzyme levels are never normal and never harmless! Unless treated, the condition leads to liver cirrhosis. The first step, therefore, is to identify the underlying cause/disease. In a next step, the extent of damage caused to the liver must be determined. This is followed by drawing up a therapy plan and estimating the outcome. Blood examination (serology), sonography and quantitative duplex sonography (blood flow measurement), contrast-enhanced sonography in the case of focal liver lesions, and shear-wave elastography to determine liver stiffness, are the pillars of differentiated liver diagnostics.

Complications arising from liver cirrhosis are the focus of inpatient treatment. Even particularly problematic symptoms which were invariably fatal in the past, can be successfully treated thanks to innovative therapies.
Severe secondary disorders e.g. refractory ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdomen) or hepatorenal syndrome (kidney failure) can thus be halted and treated.
Sclerotherapy of varices in the esophagus, treatment of acute bleeding as well as preparation for a transplantation which is then performed in close collaboration with the University of Saarland, also form part of the medical services spectrum that we offer for liver cirrhosis patients.
